The Magnificent Monuments of Venice
Santa Croce : This sestieri has two major sights – the Fondaco dei Turchi – originally the warehouse of the Ottoman Turks – used extensively for trading with the East since the 1600s. From 1924 it is in use as the Natural History Museum. The other major sight is the Ca’ Mocenigo is a symbol of one of the oldest families of Venice. Beautifully built with an imposing ‘Porte go’, this building now belongs to the city council and houses a beautiful collection of religious fabrics.
San Polo : The Rialto Bridge in this part of the city is one of the most well recognized landmarks of Venice, Italy. Built in the 1590s, the bridge was then the only permanAent structure across the Grand Canal.
The house of Carlo Goldoni – the famous playwright was born in 1707 and his house was purchased by a committee of citizens in 1814. Today the house is a centre for preservation of artists’ papers, a theatre museum and home to the institute of Theatrical Studies.
Dorsoduro : This section houses the Ca’ Rezzonico which is home to the 18th Century Museum in Venice. An earlier owner of this building was the famous English poet Robert Browning! The building was acquired by the City Council in 1925 and converted to a museum.
San Marco : This section of the town has the exceptionally beautiful Palazzo Ducale. This has been the official residence of the Doge – the rulers of the city and has also served as the Governments’ main office. The Palace has been renovated and expanded several times over the last few centuries and has evolved into a majestic and grand building. Its rooms are full of frescos depicting Venetian history. Cannaregio : The golden home takes its name from the gold leaf that once adorned this beautiful home. It was built in the 15th century and changed owners several times during its history. The last owner – the Baron Giorgio Franchetti donated this building and its vast collection.
